Why use it

The RV gen set troubleshooting process is complicated by the fact that most modern RV controls prevent operation when there is a defect. While this is desirable for safety and protection of the equipment, it makes troubleshooting frustrating and difficult. Often, a technician is forced to become a "parts changer." This approach can run up the bill pretty fast and is not effective for certain kinds of defects. A means to override the control is needed for effective troubleshooting.

How it works

What makes the G-MAN unique is its ability to plug in to the generator's control system and become a part of it, instead of being a circuit board or component tester. With this technique, called testing by exception, the G-MAN actually assumes and emulates the functionality of the part of the system being evaluated, even if defects are present. We learned this technique from servicing forklift and mining controls and we are now applying it to RV generator controls.

By using 9 available adapters, the G-Man can test over 80 Models of Emerald (BGE, BGEL, NHE & NHEL); Marquis (BGM & NHM); Microlite (KV & KY) and Camp Power (KVC, KVD, KYJ &KYD) Onan® RV Generator Sets.

In addition to emulating the functionality of potentially failed components, the G-MAN provides access to 16 key points so that voltage & resistance measurements can be safely and easily made. The G-MAN can also test generator windings for continuity & grounds at 200 VDC, something a meter alone cannot do. 9 front-panel indicators show the status of all tests and operating parameters.

Benefits in the Field

Consider an engine control board. With the G-MAN, the engine can be run with or without it. If the generator runs normally from the G-MAN but malfunctions when the control board is plugged in, we know that the board is defective. A similar method is used for the regulator and other system components. With the G-MAN, all that is needed is an engine in running condition, gas, and a good battery. The G-MAN will take you from that point to a completely working system.

About the G-Man

The name "G-MAN" and the G-MAN character have been used to promote Flight Systems' Generator Controls Products and Services for over 20 years. The G-MAN is a portable piece of test equipment that will help generator service technicians drastically reduce troubleshooting time. It does this by pinpointing problems and eliminating time-consuming guesswork.

The G-MAN is housed in an attaché-style carrying case along with its test harnesses and operating instructions. It is backed by a 2-Year Warranty. By means of interchangeable control board adapters (300-3056 & 300-3763 supplied; 9 others available as options), the G-MAN can test over 35 of the most common Onan® RV Gen Set Models and their various spec levels.
